Should I Go to AA? (Alcoholics Anonymous)?

Question by Sammie: Should I go to AA? (Alcoholics Anonymous)?
I got a DUI two years ago. I haven’t drank since. The probation officer intereviewed and said I was an alcoholic. I told her I was not an alcoholic but she said I was lying and in denial.

I want to go to medical school and become a physician. I have heard they like to see DUI offenders in AA? Should I go to AA so I look like I won’t drink again?

I am not an alcoholic and haven’t had a drop of alcohol in 2 years, but I am worried that they won’t give me a license if I am not in AA.

Should I go to AA and tell them that I am an alcoholic in remission, like they say in AA?

Can I just be honest and say I quit drinking the night of my arrest?
Please don’t say anything harsh. I am severely depressed because I have this DUI on my record. I am so ashamed and feel so defective because of it.

I don’t know whether to challenge the alcoholic label and get an attorney to get a second opinion, or play the alcoholic role and go to AA meetings and say I have a sponsor and work the steps.

How come they say you are only helping yourself if you work the steps and go to meetings?

I just quit drinking cold turkey…..but it is not good enough.

I am so ashamed I hope I am not ruined.

Don’t be ashamed, it sounds like you definitely learned from your mistake and have changed your life for the better.

I don’t think you need to go to AA. Applying to Med School will involve having to write an admissions essay. I think writing a candid essay about your experiences would help you address your past honestly without having to be someone you are not.

Good luck, and don’t let your past past keep you from moving forward.

It would not hurt for you to go, because there you can talk with others. And you can hear there stories as well. And you might just make a friend or two, it’s great that you quit drinking on your own. But a little extra help can’t hurt either, i say go learn something, and talk about what ever might still be bothering you that caused you to drink in the first place. And don’t be depressed, you sound like a good person. Good luck, and don’t worry about what others think! Again Good luck!
